A microprocessor is at the heart of every computer. Microprocessors are very complex integrated circuits that contain all of the various circuits required to make up a computer’s central processing unit. These are programmable devices that have a wide variety of different purposes.
Microprocessors accept digital data and process the data according to instructions. They then output that data after it has been processed.
Microprocessors are very versatile devices. Microprocessors can handle graphics, math, reading text documents, communication and many other tasks, all within the same device. Part of the reason that today’s microprocessors are so inexpensive is that the entire device has been integrated into one single chip. In fact, the microprocessor on a computer can oftentimes be quickly changed out by simply removing any cooling units, pulling the microprocessor out of the ZIF socket and inserting a new one.
